The prefecture and the community organized two major environmental awareness days on the Marigot seafront on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 June as part of the European Sustainable Development Week.

After visiting the fifteen stands in the rain, Pascale Alix Laborde, regional councilor in charge of the environment, Claire Javois, MP for Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy and the prefect Sylvie Feucher officially launched the event entitled “A bottle to the sea ”Friday morning.

"Our island has gone through great difficulties and deserves that we focus our attention and our efforts on environmental problems" declared Pascale Alix-Laborde in the introduction to her speech. The regional councilor announced that the COM is currently reflecting on the development of photovoltaics and on the implementation of cleaner public transport in order to reduce CO2 emissions caused by the large number of vehicles on the roads of Saint Martin.

Stressing the vulnerability of the overseas territories with regard to the consequences of global warming, the deputy stressed that they have "no other choice than to take up the ecological challenge".

Finally, the prefect explained that she had proposed last December to the navigator and journalist Catherine Chabot to become the godmother of Saint-Martin, which she accepted. "She is now a Member of the European Parliament and could not be here with us," said Sylvie Feucher. And to add: "this event is act 1 of a project that must continue over the long term so that Saint-Martin becomes an example in terms of the environment".
