Nature: Young students aware of grouper protection

0

The management association of the Saint-Martin Nature Reserve (AGRNSM) has undertaken, since last month, the implementation of intervention in schools. These contributions in schools make it possible to make children aware of the protection of the Nassau grouper and the giant grouper in Saint-Martin.

The implementation of intervention in schools is part of a vast awareness program which aims to involve local populations and local decision-makers in the protection of endangered species. So that, on each territory, six school interventions, in class and on site, must be carried out every year. Collaborations with schools started last October and continue this month and during next December, in primary schools as well as in middle and high schools. It is an opportunity for students to discover the two species of grouper, their fragile habitats and the study and management missions of these populations.

To make the population of Saint Martin more aware of the protection of these two species of grouper, the AGRNSM went to Guyana to carry out, with the help of GEPOG (Group for the study and protection of birds in Guyana) awareness video on the giant grouper and another video on the Nassau grouper. Locally, leaflets will be distributed to raise the awareness of the inhabitants of Saint-Martin and encourage them to send their data when they observe individuals of giant grouper and Nassau grouper._RM
