A study on sargassum

0

The Sargassum phenomenon has become for 7 years a real public health problem in the Caribbean basin. While strandings succeed one another on our beaches, a young medical student decided to conduct a study on health in Guadeloupe.

The initiative comes from a young doctor at the CHU, his idea: an epidemiological study to better understand and know the effects of toxic gas emanation on populations in the long term. Today knowledge about the risks of sargassum on the human body is practically nonexistent. Jérémie Dauvergne, medical intern at CHU Point-à-Pitre / Abymes and Anne Criquet-Hayot, president of the Union of Liberal Doctors of Martinique, launched an online questionnaire for residents of Guadeloupe and Martinique .

A total of twenty questions that are addressed to the population, directly or indirectly impacted by the toxic gases of sargassum. The data that will be collected will perhaps allow progress to be made in understanding and acting in the face of a phenomenon that is stagnating. And who will consolidate the investigations opened by the health authorities._JB
