To celebrate World Polio Day on October 24, the Rotary Club of St. Maarten-Mid Isle, partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), has organized two fundraising events: the first took place last weekend in a boutique on Front Street - with a check presentation at the club - and the second “Ramesh Manek Walk-a-thon” is scheduled for October 22. Polio is “a very contagious disease caused by the polio virus. It invades the nervous system and can lead to paralysis or even death in a few hours ”, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), stressing that this disease mainly affects children under 5 years old. _EH
