The abandonment and mistreatment of animals are real problems on the island, but not only. In Reunion, 75 stray dogs are counted.
"This situation causes many problems, both health and safety", comments Karine Lebon, MP for Reunion, who relies on "pedagogy". In a written question addressed at the beginning of February to the Minister of Ecological Transition, the elected representative suggests the establishment of “reinforced educational devices for both adults and children”. "The simple implementation of an information campaign aimed at adults coupled with the promotion of associative interventions within schools could lead to many changes in current and future behavior", she conceives.
Furthermore, it asks the government to create, within the overseas territories, assistance services for animal owners and specialized police in situations of animal abuse. It also asks that a real awareness-raising and reporting policy be put in place in order to remedy, upstream and at the source, the phenomena of abandonment and abuse.
