Environment: Sint Maarten landfill still on fire

0

The Sint Maarten landfill has been burning since Sunday February 4 at 17 p.m.

“The fire has become quite large and produces a lot of smoke. This smoke is toxic and dangerous for health, "Sint Maarten police said on Sunday evening in a press release before asking residents of Philipsburg and the surrounding area to close their doors and windows so as not to inhale the smoke.

Monday, February 5, the fire escalated despite the efforts of the firefighters and the company responsible for the landfill. This is why the government of Sint Maarten has decided to close the administrative buildings as well as all the schools in Philipsburg and the road to access Pond Island via Soualiga Boulevard. Firefighters from the French side were called in to help those in Sint Maarten to control the flames. The population is invited to wear a mask to protect themselves from smoke inhalation.
