Our threatened coral reefs

Due to an increase in water temperature, corals are weakened. The Natural Reserve of Saint-Martin invites the population to keep an eye out underwater in order to identify cases of coral bleaching.

Thanks to your testimony, the reserve will take stock of this phenomenon in Saint-Martin which is growing in the Caribbean and across the planet. “Coral bleaching is a natural phenomenon linked to a temporary rise in water temperature, inducing stress responsible for a dysfunction in photosynthesis of symbiotic algae in corals (…) This stress pushes the latter to expel these micro algae coloring their flesh, "recalls the reservation. For each observed case, you will have to specify the sites with the depth, the species and the importance of the phenomenon on the site concerned.

Coral threatened by El Niño

Earlier this month, scientists from the United States Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) and the University of Queensland announced that the worst episode of coral bleaching caused by El Niño is imminent. “The entire Caribbean archipelago has just been placed on alert in view of the temperatures recorded in recent months. NOAA considers the probability of the appearance of bleaching phenomena particularly high for this area, ”adds the reserve.

Your testimonies can be posted on the Facebook page of the reserve. For more info: 05 90 29 09 72.
