Polluted water with bromates: ARS wants to be reassuring about health risks

0

The director general of the regional health agency (ARS) of Guadeloupe and the northern islands came in person to participate Monday afternoon in the second press conference on the pollution of drinking water with bromates in Saint-Martin.

She explained that the search for bromates in the pipes is not a regulatory obligation, it is only at the factory outlet. But following the health crisis in Saint-Barth, the ARS decided to carry out checks in the pipes in Saint-Martin.

It also wished to reassure users about health risks, whether acute or chronic. There are no acute risks (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) because the rate for these effects to appear is "a thousand times higher" than the rates recorded in Saint Martin. "For there to be effects, we must absorb grams while we are talking in micrograms," she said. Regarding chronic risks (cancer), "you need to consume bromates during your entire life".

Finally, Valérie Denux asked the DGS of the ARS to assess "the relevance of the precautionary measures" taken, namely the ban on using tap water in the kitchen and when brushing teeth. In the meantime, it is always forbidden to consume tap water in these two cases as well as to drink it. (more details on www.soualigapost.com)
