Ornithology: Conference on the birds of the Caribbean

0

An international conference on birds of the Caribbean will take place from July 25 to 29 in Guadeloupe. This conference is organized by the BirdsCaribbean association, in partnership with the Guadeloupe National Park and will take place at the Karibea Beach Hotel in Gosier. The theme “Keeping caribbean birds aloft” was chosen following the cyclones that hit the Caribbean arc in 2017, and thus underline the resilience of ecosystems to the threats of human and climatic activities.

The organization BirdsCaribbean is dedicated to the conservation of birds in the Caribbean, and its members come from non-profit organizations, government agencies and universities from across the Caribbean. By partnering with the Guadeloupe National Park, which is a public establishment that works to protect natural heritage, BirdsCaribbean strengthens its ties in the Caribbean, and in particular with the French West Indies.

The director of BirdsCaribbean believes that birds face many challenges and that there is a need to help them. The association works to reduce the threats from plastic and habitat destruction, and to promote the benefits that birds bring, such as ecotourism.

This seminar brings together all the actors of the Caribbean in one place to tackle subjects through practical workshops and new techniques, sharing the results of bird inventories, or even the most recent scientific discoveries. This knowledge is then brought back to each of the islands, in order to preserve different species and habitats of high ecological value. Over 200 participants are expected to discuss and exchange views on the most recent advances in conservation in the Caribbean region. This year, the congress will be preceded, on July 22 and 23, by a workshop on hunting and population management for shorebird populations.

The organizers invite the general public to participate in two information sessions which will be of great interest to all. Thus, on Tuesday 23 July in the evening, a short film will be shown, and scientific presentations and a discussion forum on hunting and the management of bird populations will be offered, before a cocktail is offered. During the afternoon of Thursday, July 25, under the theme "Guadeloupe Day", the latest advances in education, conservation and research on birds in Guadeloupe will be presented.

To learn more about the day of July 23 and participate in the shorebird hunting workshop, you must register with Anatoli Bec-Canet  from the ONCFS (National Hunting and Wildlife Office), anatoli.bec-canet@oncfs.gouv.fr. Concerning the afternoon of July 25, those interested can learn more about this conference by visiting http://birdscaribbean.org/bc2019/. Registration is now open. _RM
