New pre-trial detention rules in Sint Maarten

0

The Sint Maarten prosecutor announced a new policy on pre-trial detention to respect the rights of individuals. An adult person cannot be kept in pre-trial detention in the police station for more than ten days, the period is reduced to three days for a minor. Beyond that, the suspects must be transferred to a penal establishment.

The move comes months after Francesco Corallo filed a lawsuit and won a lawsuit against the Netherlands for detention in shameful conditions. He remained in pre-trial detention at the police station for almost eight months before being extradited to Italy.
