Bromates: Lifting of the ban on drinking water in Saint-Barthélemy

Since August 2018, the drinking water of Saint-Barthélemy was no longer. In question the presence of bromates in the distribution network. Unfit for consumption for 13 months, the ban on the use of running water was lifted by the ARS (Regional Health Agency) this Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

ARS and the Collectivity of Saint-Barthélemy  thus inform the entire population of the island, as well as businesses and visitors, that the restrictions on consumption of city water, linked to the presence of bromates, have been lifted. Thus, tap water can be consumed normally, for all purposes, including drinking, cooking food and brushing teeth.

The analyzes, which were carried out by an approved laboratory, show bromate levels throughout the network, in accordance with regulatory standards. A return to normal due to the implementation of a new water treatment process.

The results led the ARS to issue a favorable opinion for the lifting of all usage restrictions. In a press release, the Collectivity of Saint-Barthélemy, ensures that with "all of its delegatees in charge of the public water service, (it) maintains vigilant surveillance to guarantee the quality of the water produced in the long term and distributed ”. Saint-Barthélemy spent 13 months without drinking water, and the ban on the consumption of Saint-Martin water came at the end of June 2019. The return to normal on the Saint-Martin network was expected around December , i.e. 6 months after the ban. Let us remain optimistic…!
