The representatives of the Fondation de France (FDF), on an official visit to Saint Martin, met with the management of the Compagnons Bâtisseurs to take stock of their collaboration.

From left to right, back to front: Yseult Dubernet, architect and FDF volunteer, Élodie Paillé, Fondation de France, Karine Meaux, Head of the International Solidarity and Emergencies Department at the Fondation de France, Jean-Louis Vielajus, volunteer Fondation de France, Maë Bridier, Director of the Saint Martin establishment, Thibaut, technical coordinator and two residents of Cripple Gate who benefited from an ARA project in the adaptation of housing for elderly or disabled people with loss of autonomy.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, the Fondation de France created its “Solidarité Antilles” program to help the population of Saint Martin hard hit by the natural disaster.

The FDF, being in search of an operator who can intervene on the territory to support the reconstruction of the island with the most precarious people, naturally approached the Compagnons Bâtisseurs, a national association which has been working for more than 50 years for the improvement of housing, economic integration in the construction sector and the reception of young volunteers. Even if emergency situations are not part of the core business of the Compagnons Bâtisseurs, the associative movement has mobilized for the cause. Arrived in 2018, the Compagnons Bâtisseurs started the program "a roof for you", financed by the Fondation de France, a program dedicated to the reconstruction of the framework-roofing of homes for people in need, as part of the Atelier and Work Integration (ACI). At the end of 2019, the operation made it possible to redo the framework-roofs of 141 homes. Finally, in view of the progress of the project and the desire for a permanent establishment of the Compagnons Bâtisseurs in Saint Martin in order to continue their activity, the Fondation de France and the Collectivity of Saint Martin have come together to set up a multi-annual and multiparty. The budget allocated by the Fondation de France to the tune of three million therefore finances the framework-roofing work but also the Accompanied Self-Rehabilitation (ARA) sites which are also an opportunity for the inhabitants, volunteers and volunteers to be actors active citizenship by relying on everyone's ability to act. Not to mention the neighborhood workshops (at Sandy Ground and in Quartier d'Orléans) with collective activities linked to DIY, home renovation and the beautification of a home, or the loan of tools and the educational troubleshooting with a dual purpose: the transmission of know-how and  the creation of social ties. The representatives of the Fondation de France visited several construction sites, completed, in progress or future in the presence of the officials of the Compagnons Bâtisseurs, thus underlining the importance of continuing such collaboration for the good of the population of Saint Martin. _VX
