Environment: The “Green Initiatives” against single-use plastics in Saint-Martin!

0

The Green Initiatives group has decided to launch a movement to ban single-use plastics. From October 1 and December 31, the objective is to show the authorities that the inhabitants of Sint-Maarten and Saint-Martin are in favor of a ban on single-use plastics, and that solutions already exist on the island .

The group of "Green Initiatives" is convinced that it is urgent that Sint Maarten / Saint-Martin ratify a bill for the prohibition of single-use plastics. Sint Maarten (Dutch side) is the last red dot on the map in the Caribbean, with most of the other islands in the region having already ratified, or implemented a ban on single-use plastics.

The group of '' Green Initiatives '' is made up of non-governmental organizations and companies offering ecological products on the island, on both the Dutch and French sides of the island. This group, created in January 2018, aims to promote cooperation and sharing to work collectively on large-scale projects for the sustainability of the island. All members do this work on a voluntary basis.

With the launch of this movement to ban single-use plastics, the objective is to obtain 10 signatures including residents, the diaspora and international tourists. The "Green Initiatives" want to show the Government of Sint Maarten that citizens and tourists in love with the island support this movement.

This call is available on the Change.org platform in order to make it the most accessible to the greatest number.

On December 31, the signatures will be delivered to the Parliament of Sint Maarten, and to the Prefecture and Collectivity of Saint-Martin. As the slogan around this movement reminds us, the "Green Initiatives" have the hope of starting 2020 with "Less plastic, more SXM!".

Communication and awareness-raising events will be organized until the end of the year to explain the harmful impacts of single-use plastics. Nina Bijnsdorp, Coordinator for '' Green Initiatives '' and Event Manager at Waste2Work explains why: '' The pollution caused by single-use plastics are a threat to our environment, but also to the economy of Sint Maarten / Saint- Martin, and the health of its inhabitants. Our terrestrial and marine biodiversity, and our birds, die from plastic ingestion or strangulation. Our children breathe toxic fumes from landfill fires. Our tourists are repelled by the waste on our coasts and our beaches. ''

Instead of pointing the finger at people or organizations in particular, the group of "Green Initiatives" takes the side of the positive and prefers to show the sustainable solutions that already exist in Sint Maarten / Saint-Martin to replace single-use plastics. .

For example, The Nature Foundation, active on the Dutch side, has listed the companies that have taken the plunge and chosen sustainable solutions rather than resorting to single-use plastics, and indicates the places where to obtain these ecological products locally.
