ASSOCIATIVE LIFE: Tournesol Association: when disability becomes a strength

0

The association which helps people with disabilities opened the doors of its new premises for a morning, discovering the activities and services offered in an atmosphere of great solidarity and enthusiasm.

Created in 2007 due to the lack of structure in the area, the Tournesol association has come a long way since then. First of all by the creation of day care with a specialist in 2011 where children and adolescents who did not have a place in SESSAD (support service for children with disabilities) were welcomed, thus allowing them to leave their homes. There are currently seventeen people between 13 and 54 years old supervised by two animators. Music permanently rocks this room dedicated to bodily, cognitive, intellectual and expressive development through activities such as puzzles, arithmetic, reading, etc.

The technical workshop is noticed by its section of wall covered with photos of young people at work: painting, assembly, cutting, creation, whether within the association or outside. And the outings are not to be outdone: horse riding, ceramic painting (Pinky Chich), karate (with Thierry, Carribean Karate Oyama), their many benefits were quickly noticed. Since January 8, 2021, the ambitious professional integration project for disabled adults with intellectual disabilities co-financed by the ESF (European Social Fund) has been a real success. Twelve people between 18 and 41 years old without medical treatment requiring care or psychiatric pathology now benefit from this program which aims to highlight the immense potential of people with intellectual disabilities, and with appropriate support (tutor) and a maximum of autonomy, their capacity to manage their life differently, to work and to produce in the well-being, is undeniable. If there is a young man who is the proof, it is Elijah, painter whose gallery is at the Tournesol association who helped him to create his individual business, and to whom we owe the iguana fresco at the last SXM Festival. Elijah enjoys the place for a few hours of his time where he leads drawing workshops with other young people in day care. Roll on the opening! _VX
