On Wednesday, October 27, the Sint Maarten Court of First Instance handed down convictions in various cases of attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of firearms.

The court sentenced a man, KMR, to fourteen years' imprisonment for two home trespassing at gunpoint, and as a co-perpetrator of attempted manslaughter and possession of a firearm.

For his part, JJA was found guilty of complicity in the possession of a firearm, and sentenced to 24 months' imprisonment. The judge took into account, in the conviction, an earlier sanction dated August 4, 2021, for attempted manslaughter.

Another man, RB, was sentenced to 21 months in prison, including six months suspended, and three years probation for possession of a firearm.

Armed robberies and attempted manslaughter, or murder, using a firearm continue to be a problem in the territory, and contribute to a sense of fear and unease among residents and visitors, considers the Sint Maarten prosecutor. _AF
