SOCIETY: Continuation and end of the answers of the candidates for the territorial election to the socio-professionals of the island

This last part devoted to the meeting between entrepreneurs and six of the candidates for the next elections organized by FIPCOM will deal with the last three questions for which the response time was two minutes each.

To the question "what priority power to request in the context of a reform of the organic law?" », Jules Charville chose to put the competence of the environment forward in order to ensure a total control of the land and to deploy a strategy of territorial development. James Hamlet aims to provide itself with the technical means to fully exercise tax and town planning skills with a working method based on expertise and consultation of the living forces. Yawo Nyuiadzi prefers to stabilize the skills acquired before considering asking the state for new ones, with the priority of restoring employment with strong training and incentive measures for business development. Louis mussington would like to modify the constitutional architecture by having a government made up of ministers, a president and an assembly, with the possibility of creating laws of the country on an experimental basis, like what is done today in Polynesia French. Valerie Damaseau would opt for a reform of the status of the elected, with a separation of powers between the president of the executive council and the president of the territorial council, obliging the latter to concentrate on legislative work, including amendments to the organic law. At last, Daniel Gibbs recalled that the reform of the organic law of 2007 is not an end in itself and that the objective is to best apply the interests of Saint Martin by focusing on the skills acquired with fair compensation from the state.

With regard to the question relating to the concrete measure to be implemented to enable harmonization in economic and social matters between the two parts of the island, the various heads of lists of the parties represented came together in advocating a strengthening of cooperation between the French side and the Dutch side. Daniel Gibbs proposes the realization of a tool to ensure this cooperation, with deliberation of decisions and stability of the two policies. Jules Charville would set up an assembly that would make joint decisions with a file cross-checking tool to fight against fraud. James Hamlet aims to reunify the two parts of the island, with a desire to work together with the respective French and Dutch assets. Valerie Damaseau wishes to sign a data and statistics sharing agreement between the two parties, with decisions applied on both sides and a more frank use of the English language in the administrative services on the French side. Yawo Nyuiadzi mentioned the new 3DS law of decentralization with the ambition to create a common company with the Dutch side while relaunching the marketing strategy of promoting the territory. Louis mussington would sign a partnership with the Dutch side for specific island taxation and cooperation based on the reality of the territory.

The last question submitted to the candidates addressed the key point to remember from their interventions and actions over the past 5 years, specifically concerning socio-professionals. The assembly was especially attentive to the answers. Valerie Damaseau recalled that as president of the Tourist Office, she had worked to strengthen ties with socio-professionals and to propose programs aimed at supporting local actors. Louis mussington, in opposition during this period, suggests strengthening the sustainable development center for better management of files, with better consultation with socio-professionals. Daniel Gibbs summarized the initiatives put in place to support companies affected by the two crises, Irma and the Covid, the postponement of tax deadlines, property tax exemptions and aid schemes. James Hamlet aims to make socio-professionals, essential in its eyes, true partners of the COM for economic recovery. Jules Charville would create a system of support and entourage in the exchange of ideas and action such as campaigning against the closure of borders during confinement or attacking the refusal to extend the Grand-Case track. Yawo Nyuiadzi ended the tour de table on this issue by praying for a gathering of people from different backgrounds, with a structuring of the different professional sectors and a desire for feedback from socio-professionals towards political decision-makers, underlining the need for dialogue .

The moderators Sandrine Jabouley Delahaye and Francesca Hunt then carried out a draw of questions "for or against" addressing topics such as real estate tax exemption or the increase in the TGCA. The Meeting of Entrepreneurs ended with questions asked by the public where each candidate was challenged at least once. The unprecedented exercise to which the candidates lent themselves and driven by the FIPCOM team, which required three months of preparation, was as interesting for the assembly as it was challenging for the heads of the party lists. Exercise that will probably serve them in their officially launched campaigns. _VX
