On Saturday May 29, at around 17:50 p.m., the Sint Maarten police telephone exchange received calls concerning the disappearance of an 81-year-old man, who was swimming in Great Bay.
Police officers and the coast guard were immediately dispatched to search for the missing person. The Coast Guard star continued the search late that evening, without any success. Due to the darkness, the search for the swimmer was halted.
On Sunday, May 30 in the morning, around 8:30 am, the coast guard who had resumed the search, found the body of the octogenarian in the water, near the Divi Little Bay Beach Resort. The first elements of the investigation concluded that the victim had died of drowning.
