After the passage of Hurricane Irma, Public Health France in the Antilles region set up a specific monitoring system for medical and psychological consultations in Saint-Martin. The purpose of this monitoring system is to assess over time the use of healthcare for the populations resident on the two islands affected by the events. Between September 2017 and April 2018, 794 individual consultations were carried out, including 510 consultations between September and December 2017 and 284 between January and April 2018. “Since the end of December 2017, there has been a drop in declared consultations compared to the last quarter of 2017 linked to the departure of health reservists who represented 80% of individual consultations in the last quarter of 2017 ”, notes Public Health.

Two thirds of those who consulted are women and are between 26 and 60 years old. 95% of people were present in Saint-Martin during the passage of Irma, 3% had a loved one injured or died, 4% of them were victims of looting or aggression. More than eight in ten people have suffered a material loss (property, work tool, financial loss).

22% of those who consulted lived in Marigot, 15% in Sandy Ground and 9,6% in Quartier d'Orléans. "It should be noted that a significant part of the living quarters were not declared (34%) during the first quarter of 2018", specify the authors of the study.

The most frequent psychological manifestations encountered by the actors in the system are a state of stress, anxiety disorders and sleep. (More details on www.soualigapost.com)
