Saba powered by 100% solar energy

The island of Saba was supplied with electricity with 100% solar energy for two hours Wednesday afternoon, announces the Saba Electric Company (SEC). From 15 p.m. to 17 p.m., the diesel generators were turned off. The experiment was repeated on Thursday from 8 a.m.

"The ambition is to provide electricity produced from solar energy, for nine or ten hours a day when weather conditions permit," says the SEC. This used the technologies of the Dutch company Ecorus and SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH to build batteries and thus be able to store the energy produced.

The production capacity is 2 MWp (mega watt peak) and that of storage of 2.3 MWh.

“The key component is the Sunny Central Storage 2200 battery converter, which allows the diesel generators in the plant to be completely shut down in automatic mode, without compromising the frequency stability in the grid. The SMA Hybrid controller is responsible for real-time energy and consumption management and synchronizes diesel and battery operation intelligently and automatically, ”explains Saba Electric Company.

European funds from the EDF and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs have been granted to Saba to finance this project.
