The first months of the year were particularly dry and the next three should also be dry, according to Météo France, which forecasts “a deficit trend for the Antilles” in terms of rainfall until July.

Although low rainfall from January to April is normal since it is the dry season known as the Lent period, the rainfall in Saint-Martin is still less than normal.

Between January and April, 111,9 mm of rain fell in 30 days. It rained the most in January and February with respectively 31,6 mm and 52,1 mm of precipitation, an average well below the norms of Météo France recorded during the last thirty years, which are established at 55,4 mm in January and 43,3 mm in February.

In March this year, only 9 mm of rain fell and in April 20,2 mm, the normal being 44,1 mm and 59,8 mm.

Compared to the previous year over the same period, it is 34,6 mm less rain. Or 77 mm less compared to 2017.

However, precipitation is currently higher than that recorded in 2015, a year of great drought in the West Indies. For the record, 515,4 mm of rain fell over the year over 114 days, including 106 mm between January and April. 2015 was classified by Météo France "among the driest years and comparable to record years in terms of rainfall droughts, 1997 and 1973".

In Saint-Martin the farmers had suffered a lot and 39 of them had been helped by the COM which had brought 1 hay bales for the cattle.
