The damage caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria in Saint-Martin and in Guadeloupe at the beginning of September is estimated at nearly two billion euros, announced yesterday the French overseas department.

At the end of an evaluation conducted by the General Inspection of Administration (IGA) and the General Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development (CGEDD), itself updated by the evaluation conducted using data from the Caisse Centrale de Réassurance, the State estimates the damage caused by the passage of Irma and Maria at the islands of Saint-Martin and Guadeloupe at 1,956 billion euros, the French overseas department said. A press release.

Overseas Minister Annick Girardin is going to Brussels today to submit a request to the European Commission to activate the European Union Solidarity Fund (FSUE). To this end, the Minister will meet with Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs.

The European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) was set up to deal with major natural disasters and to express EU solidarity with the stricken regions.

The evaluation of the amount of the assistance from the FSUE for Saint-Martin and Guadeloupe will be the subject of discussions between the State services and those of the European Commission.

The island of Saint Barthélémy is not eligible for the EUSF but may possibly benefit from other aid mechanisms from the European Union, in particular the European Development Fund.
