The non-profit association Caribbean Sail Training recently announced that in cooperation with A + World Academy and the 3-masted ship "Sorlandet", two young seafarers have been selected as trainees to participate in an exciting adventure in the sailing on a "Tall Ship".

Cécilia Pivin, 16, of Saint Martin, and Claudia Ramirez, 14, of Puerto Rico, successfully passed the boat selections during a free six-week training trip, from February 12 to March 24 2020.

Sorlandet, one of the most prestigious of the 75 ships members of the non-profit organization Caribbean Sail Training, will embark the two young people from the port of Marigot for a trip to Ocho Rios in Jamaica with New York in the United States as their final destination. .

The two young girls already have some sailing experience with Claudia in particular a member of the sailing team of the Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club of Puerto Rico, and who has already participated in five International sailing regattas on Optimist.

The Port of Marigot Galisbay will welcome the Sorlandet on the pier during a day open to the public on Sunday, February 9, 2020. The details of this day will be communicated later.

The Maritime School of the West Indies located in Saint-Martin and main partner of this sailing training is looking for an airline  as co-sponsor to take charge of the tickets for young interns for the return from New York to Puerto Rico and to St. Maarten Juliana Airport.

The school also offered a safety course of $ 1190 US STCW'95 / 2010 to the two trainees before departure.

• Presentation of "Sorlandet"

The "Sorlandet" is the oldest and most authentic fully rigged vessel in the world still in active service today.

The ship was built in 1927 in Kristiansand, Norway, as a ship dedicated to training young people in the merchant navy.

The demand for regular training of young sailors decreasing in the 70s, the three masts expanded its activities to accommodate the general public on board. The name Sorlandet comes from the southern region of Norway meaning "the southern land". The vessel is classified 1A1 * in the NORSKE VERITAS and has all the certificates necessary for world trade. Its capacity is 70 trainees.

About us A + World Academy

The A + World Academy school is an AP® university preparatory secondary school offering an international AP® Capstone diploma, lessons are taught on board while the ship is sailing to different places in the world.

Our cadets are trained in maritime history, safety and sailing. The A + World Academy is particularly proud of its academic, physical, mental, social, emotional and cultural rigor. We build courage, resilience and persistence thanks to the radical nature of our program and do not hesitate to tell future students and parents / guardians that all are taken to the extreme in all aspects. Our comprehensive sailing training program is a non-stop education program combining cultural field experiences in ports around the world with the difficulties inherent in living in a small community of learners with very little of personal time or space. All of our students are confronted with cultural differences linked to the diversity of recruitments.

•  Travel shapes the young…

The 2019-2020 travel plan started in Kristiansand in Norway then France, Spain, Italy, Morocco, Canary Islands, Cabo Verde Islands, Brazil, Barbados, St. Martin-St. Maarten , Jamaica, New York. USA, Azores, Netherlands and return to Norway.

Good luck to Cécilia and Claudia as well as to the "Sorlandet" crew members!_AF
