The “El Maud” wreck at Galisbay will disappear from the local landscape!

The president of the Community, Daniel Gibbs announced it when he took office in April 2017: the wreck of the boat "El Maud", located in the Baie de la Potence in Galisbay, was to disappear from the local landscape. It is now done!

Launched well before the passage of Hurricane IRMA, this public contract was awarded last July to the Dutch company "Koole BV", for an amount of € 395. The works started in mid-October and have just been completed.

As a reminder, during the passage of Hurricane "Lenny" in November 1999, the ship "El Maud" ran aground 100 meters from shore, by about 4.5 meters deep. 70 meters long and weighing 800 tonnes, the wreck was never decommissioned and has deteriorated over the years. The forfeiture of the right of property having been pronounced by the administrative authority (art. L5142-2 of the Transport Code), it enabled the community of Saint-Martin to act and to proceed with the removal of this wreck.

The specifications provided for the sorting and removal of debris and demolition waste of all kinds and the work to restore the seabed. The Company therefore had to produce a detailed methodological and organizational brief indicating precisely the material and human resources used to carry out this work.

The selective sorting of materials and the removal of all debris from demolition is a legal obligation, in accordance with the Environment Code (Art L541-24). The service provider was therefore responsible for implementing the means necessary to guarantee the continuity of the disposal channels and the recycling of materials, and carried out a complete cleaning of the seabed at the end of the site. In addition to the wreck of the "El Maud" which has been distorting the Baie de la Potence for 18 years, many ships were damaged by Hurricane IRMA on September 6, and must be removed from the coastal areas. The nautical sector estimates in fact at 1 the number of damaged boats, 000 of which have been listed as wrecks. In fact, a legitimate question must be asked: what will become of all these carcasses of boats? _AF
