Twenty-four hours before the first eruption of the Soufrière volcano which occurred on the morning of Friday April 9, the government of Sint Maarten, already worried about the situation, hastened to contact Ralph Gonsalves, the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to express their solidarity and support.

Deputy Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Egbert Doran, said in a statement that it was important "to maintain good relations with the other islands in the region, to show solidarity and to provide assistance when a close neighbor is in need.
