Education: A day of discovery at sea for the students of Collège Mont des Accords

0

Last May, 70 sixth-grade students from Mont des Accords college were able to explore the marine environment thanks to the combined action of the college's educational community, including two parents of volunteer students, from the St. Martin, from the association "Mon Ecole Ma Baleine" (MEMB), financial assistance from the Collectivity and the commercial port, and the Scoobi Too team from Marine Time.

Early in the morning, the LeScoobi Too catamaran and its crew, Philippe and Marion, await the students at the quay at the Marigot ferry terminal. The students are eager to discover the marine environment, cetaceans (dolphins, whales), and the biodiversity of the islet Tintamarre preserved thanks to the action of the Nature Reserve.

Everyone is on board. Along for the adventure.

The catamaran is gone, it crosses the bay of Galisbay which should see an Educational Marine Area created near the still existing mangrove pond.

Sailing near the coast, the children discover the island of St-Martin from the sea.

After Friar's bay, it's time to make a stop near the coast. Amandine from the MEMB association presents the cetaceans present in St-Martin (humpback whales, dolphins) and immerses a hydrophone to listen to the songs of the whales. Everyone listens with solemnity but no whale sound on the horizon.

Here we are at the height of the Creole Rock (protected by the Nature Reserve) and are on our way to the Tintamarre islet. Things get tough. The children wisely lying on the trampoline hang on and face the great waves of the ocean. Moment of intense joy and excitement when the big catamaran rises in front of the wave and falls back into the hollow… better than a merry-go-round!

Tintamarre is getting closer. Quiet now at anchor. Equipped with a vest, they will finally be able to get into the water, slide on the slide, jump from the trampoline. After the lunch break, comes the long-awaited moment, go ashore to discover the ilet. Amandine our guide will show them the fauna and flora of Baie Blanche beach and the importance of this beach as a nesting site for sea turtles.

Children and adults are captivated. After a beautiful, informative hike, you have to resign yourself to board to join Marigot

Scoobitoo is already sailing under sail to Marigot. You must also participate in the maneuver!

A foam maneuver under the watchful eye of Marion.

The children look at the coast once again. It's time to disembark. On the quay among the flood of multicolored stalls, they see the large catamaran leaving. They greet him and thank him and the crew with great gestures and cries. The information collected during these days at sea will be used in the classroom during the implementation of the Marine Educational Area project.

Let them for the moment savor these wonderful moments spent over these two days.
