The Collectivity of Saint-Martin launched its project to build new carbets from Orient Bay on public plot AW34. In agreement with the operators holding a temporary authorization to occupy the public domain (AOT), the Collectivity takes charge of the construction of the common areas and leaves it to the operators to set up their own structure, according to a set of specifications. predefined loads.

Completely destroyed by Hurricane Irma, the barbets of Orient Bay will once again be able to welcome the public during the next tourist season.

Despite the accumulated delay, the Collectivity has just completed the installation of collective infrastructure, the creation of water and sanitation networks, pedestrian walkways, sanitary and public lighting being at its expense. The Collectivity also took charge of the installation of 8 kiosks (mini-shops) and the 2 locations intended for nautical activities. The AOTs were awarded by decision of the regional planning commission and ratified by the vote of the Executive Council.

Restaurant and shop operators can now start their installation according to the specifications defined by the Collectivity, which authorizes either the construction of a permanent building and / or the installation of two 20-foot containers, with the possibility of use wooden siding.

The Carbets complex must accommodate 9 restaurants, 4 large boutiques, 4 small boutiques, as well as 8 kiosks and 2 watersports. In the specifications, each restaurant has an area of 75m2 to install the catering part, complete with a terrace of 75m2 (which can be covered) and a beach area of 75m2. The roofs must be blue, while two other colors (optional) are authorized to paint wooden cladding, doors and shutters. The new carbets will be installed set back from the sea, thus offering a larger beach surface and better protection against swell. The project management is ensured by Architectural Studio under the contracting authority of the Collectivity, via the Sustainable Development Pole, chaired by the vice-president Steven Patrick.

This project leaves a certain autonomy of realization to the operators of the businesses which must however comply with the pre-established building rules. Operators who have chosen to install mobile structures may transport them to a safe place in the event of a cyclone alert.

Finally, in order to finalize the development of this essential beach, the Collectivity is considering the creation of a beautiful pedestrian promenade along the beach with two large parking spaces. The goal is to allow residents and tourists to enjoy a deck along the beach. This project is still under study and will be carried out in a second phase of work.
