During the first half of the year, the traffic recorded at the port of Pointe Blanche in Philipsburg shows an overall decrease of 18% compared to last year, both in terms of the number of movements and the number of containers handled.
In the first half of 2020, the port of Philipsburg handled 28937 containers, or 6523 less than in 2019 (-18%). The first half of 2019 had already seen a 19% drop in the number of containers handled compared to the first half of 2018, which saw traffic explode due to post-Irma reconstruction (+ 38%). The number of containers handled between January and June of this year is equivalent to 2015-2016.
This year's results can be explained by a drop of a quarter in the number of 20-foot containers in the second quarter (4648 compared to 6229 in 2019). It is also the number most observed in the last five years during this period.
On the other hand in absolute value, it is the 40-foot traffic in the second quarter that fell the most with 2537 fewer boxes processed compared to 2019 over the period. That's around 195 40-foot containers less processed per week.
Finally, it should be noted that traffic at the port of Philipsburg was already 14% lower in the first quarter compared to 2019. The health crisis only accentuated the trend in the second quarter (-23%). (Soualigapost.com)
