“Two Sint-Maarten nationals, aged about XNUMX, known to the Dutch justice system for aggravated thefts, were surrendered to French justice by the authorities of Sint-Maarten, in the context of a request for extradition based on an international arrest warrant from the Basse-Terre investigating judge, as part of the information opened last June following the attack on the jewelry store on rue Général de Gaulle in Marigot.

Recall of facts. On June 28, 2017, around 13:30 p.m., in the city center of Marigot, six thieves attacked the jewelry store "Jewel by love" by showing off a handgun, forcing the door with a metal ram and smashing the displays with masses of construction site to steal for around 1,7 million euros of luxury watches, then quickly fled to Bellevue, on three powerful scooters without license plates, leaving behind a falsely registered stolen car and their equipment.

Thanks to police cooperation with Sint-Maarten and to the careful investigation work of the Gendarmerie research section in Saint-Martin, two people suspected of having participated in these facts were quickly identified in Sint-Maarten, subject to a request for provisional arrest and then a request for extradition to be heard by the investigating judge, this is the first surrender in this investigation which is continuing.

Presented before the magistrate of Basse-Terre, they were charged with the chief of flight aggravated by three circumstances (reunion, degradation and by masking their face), usurpation of license plate, concealment of theft and possession of weapon category B, and remanded in Basse-Terre.

Once again, the border will not allow impunity on the Island of Saint-Martin, and the prosecution underlines the very good police and judicial cooperation between the two parts of the Island to combat cross-border crime. ”
