Cooperation: Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Saint Martin and the Canary Islands

President Daniel Gibbs is currently attending the 23rd Conference of Presidents of the Outermost Regions (ORs), in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, alongside representatives of the 8 ORs in Europe. At the end of the conference, Saint-Martin will chair the CPRUP for a period of one year. 

On his arrival, last Wednesday, November 21 in Las Palmas, President Gibbs was greeted by his counterpart, the President of the Canaries Fernando Clivajo, in the presence of the presidents and elected officials of the other member territories.

Gathered at Casa De Colon, the Christophe Colon museum in Las Palmas, Fernando Clivajo and Daniel Gibbs signed the Memorandum of Understanding between Saint Martin and the Canaries aimed at promoting cooperation between the two territories in the framework of the transfer of power of the Presidency of the Conference of Presidents (CPRUP).

By signing this MOU, the two territories wanted to demonstrate their firm will to strengthen their cooperation and inter-island coordination in areas of common interest for the well-being of their populations and the socio-economic development of their regions. . The presidents thus wish to strengthen their political proximity through an amplified and more frequent technical cooperation between the Outermost Regions within the Conference of Presidents.

The MOU provides for concrete cooperation actions in promising areas such as Research, Development and Innovation (RDI), Renewable Energies, Tourism and Port Development, Adaptation to the Effects of Climate Change and Youth Mobility.

A beautiful “exhibition” of photos…

At the end of the signing, President Clivajo and President Gibbs presented a very beautiful exhibition of photographs organized by the government of the Canaries and the community of Saint Martin, on the theme “Saint Martin, the resilience of a Isle ". Through the artistic prism of four photographers from Saint-Martin, Nathalie Beaurain, Claudio Arnell, Steph Déziles and Laurent Bayly, the many guests and the Spanish press were able to discover and feel the impact of the cyclonic phenomenon on the territory and the tremendous resilience inhabitants.
