International conference on sargassum: After words, make way for action!

A real scourge and danger to health, Sargassum algae, which proliferate everywhere in the Caribbean, were at the center of the international conference held last week in Guadeloupe.

After reading the final declaration signed by the Caribbean States and Territories, consisting of 12 articles and concrete proposals to stem the pollution of sargassum, Edouard Philippe spoke during the closing day.

The Prime Minister underlined the dimension and the international stakes of this pollution and the need to work jointly with the countries of the Caribbean basin, in particular during the next Cop 25 and within the framework of a research plan carried by the States to internationally.

The operational phase, which directly concerns the communities, will be based on a common action plan materialized by a roadmap which will have to take into account all the stages, from scientific research to the detection of sargassum at sea , including the collection, treatment and recovery of algae.

Among the strong points of the Sargassum plan: the creation of an alert and surveillance center with daily readings and the implementation of an action guide within 48 hours to avoid the decomposition of algae.

What the communities are already trying to implement.

The question of valuing sargassum was widely highlighted during the conference, notably through the search for a blue economy on an international scale.

If this first edition gave the opportunity to the States and territories to advance on the issue of sargassum through a transversal reflection, it reminds us above all that the cooperation and the financial means which will be allocated to this multilateral action plan are the sine qua non condition for the success of this unprecedented collective action.

Daniel Gibbs: "we need a strong commitment from states alongside communities"

Also present at the international conference, the president, Daniel Gibbs addressed the assembly during the session "Geopolitical strategy and international challenges". The latter recalled the international challenges to be tackled together to stem this pollution phenomenon, and mentioned the imperative need for a strong commitment of the states alongside the Communities. Beyond the fight against sargassum, the president insisted on the protection of our common biodiversity today in danger.

President Gibbs welcomed the organization of the conference and the involvement of the Ambassador Delegate for Cooperation with the Antilles-Guyana, Jean-Bernard Nilam, describing this first edition as "a good exercise in cooperation on a large scale international ”.
