Saint Martin commemorated this Tuesday, May 28, 2019, the official date of the abolition of slavery on the territory (May 28, 1848).

An artistic representation orchestrated by the Culture department of the community with the pupils of the Libraries documentary centers (BCD) of the schools, the elected officials of the territorial council of the young people and the troupes of singers and dancers of Natisha Hanson and Grain d'or, was presented to the public to the sound of percussions by Elié Coquillas and his musicians. The commemoration took place near the Lady Liberty statue, symbol of emancipation, on the Agrément roundabout.

The official speeches made by First Vice-President Valérie Damaseau, MP Claire Guion Firmin and Prefect Sylvie Feucher were opened with the Saint-Martin hymn “Oh Sweet St Martin Land” magnificently interpreted by Sidonie Miller.

The ceremony was punctuated by a presentation of the life of slaves after the emancipation represented by Mister Jombole and his troop, particularly moving.
