In 2019, the town planning services of the Collectivity granted 198 building permits; this is a record figure for the last fifteen years. This is twice as much as in 2009, the year from which the construction sector began to deteriorate.
In the years 2005-2007, 135 permits were granted annually. At the start of the 2010s, the number fell below the 100 mark: 66 in 2011, 59 in 2013, 73 in 2015. The lowest figure was recorded in 2012 with 54 authorizations.
In 2018, the year after Irma, only 100 permits were granted due to the simplified procedures put in place to facilitate reconstruction. In addition to the permits, the COM granted 75 PD (prior declaration of works) and 441 DPI (prior Irma declaration).
The number of permits issued in the French part is significantly lower than that of Sint Maarten. For example, the authorities of the Dutch side granted 252 permits in 2014 or 219 in 2015. In the first half of 2019, 118 permits were granted and during the first six months of 2020, 64 permits were given, including 46 for residential purposes.
