Assessment of the “International Coastal Cleanup”

0

Many volunteers took part last September in the annual “International Coastal Cleanup” event at Nettle Bay. The final waste count was recently completed and forwarded by the local coordinator of the Pride Foundation of Sint Maarten to the conservation group Ocean Conservancy. More than a ton of rubbish was collected by the 300 volunteers - including schools and businesses - on nearly 3 km of beach, in the presence of the various partners. No less than 89 garbage bags were filled by the volunteers. These data will be compiled in the global report of this institution. Each year, nearly 8,8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the oceans, according to a recent American study. _EH
