Excellent. This is how the quality of bathing in the French part of Saint-Martin was classified by the regional health agency (ARS).

This assessment follows 114 samples taken in 2019-2020 on 12 sea bathing sites referenced at European level: Baie Longue, Baie aux Prunes, Baie Rouge, Friar's Bay, Grand Case, Petite Plage, Anse Marcel, Grandes Cayes Nord, Grandes Cayes South, Pinel islet, North Orient Bay, South Orient Bay, North Mouth Bay and South Mouth Bay. "100% of swimming classified in excellent quality with reference to the results of the last four seasons", thus indicates the ARS.

"The sanitary control consists of regular monitoring in the field, water samples taken at each control and the sanitary interpretation of the results of analyzes carried out by the Institut Pasteur de Guadeloupe, a laboratory approved by the Ministry of Health ”, explains the ARS, stressing that two bacteriological parameters, indicators of water quality, are sought, faecal streptococci and escherichia coli. In the field, in addition to taking the sample, a visual check is carried out for transparency, the presence of artificial foams, tarry residues, glass, plastic or others.

Of the waters analyzed by ARS Guadeloupe, only those of Saint-Martin are 100% “excellent” in 2020 with reference to the results of the last four years. In Saint-Barth, 92,3% of classified swims are of excellent quality, 7,7% of swims classified as good quality. In Guadeloupe, 61% of classified swims are of excellent quality, i.e. ten percent less than for the 2018 season; 11% are of good quality, 11% of sufficient quality, 13% of insufficient quality, ie ten percent more than for the 2018 season. And swimming remains prohibited at four sites.
