Local life: A look back at the 170th commemoration of the abolition of slavery

Last Monday took place the 170th commemoration of the abolition of slavery in Saint-Martin in the presence of many personalities. The ceremony took place in the heart of one of the most picturesque and authentic villages on the French side, Colombier.

A commemoration which for the first time takes place on May 28, the historic date of the abolition of slavery in Saint Martin which was revealed by the research of Mrs. Daniella Jeffry, with the support of the Directorate of Territorial Archives and the Heritage of the Community for administrative procedures. Now remains to obtain the final ministerial decree which will set May 28 as the official date of commemoration in St. Martin, says the president, Daniel Gibbs. _AF
