Towards better care for the elderly and disabled

The creation of a medical and social center in the Northern Islands is now a reality. During the last Territorial Council, the elected officials unanimously decided to launch requests for funding for this project, which will make it possible to host several establishments for the elderly and disabled on the same site.

The Territorial Council will request funding requests from the CNSA (National Solidarity Fund for Autonomy), the State and Europe for the creation of this medico-social pole estimated at 27 million euros. Located in the Savannah sector, the site will host a 72-place accommodation facility for dependent elderly people (EHPAD); a 44-place medical and educational institute (IME); a home for the disabled comprising a specialized reception house with 20 places and a living room with 20 places; a 15-place work assistance establishment (ESAT); an early medico-social action center (CAMPS) with 15 places and a specialized education and home support service (SESSAD) which will follow 35 to 40 children. Currently, there are two structures on the territory: an EHPAD of 40 places and a SESSAD which takes care of forty children, recalled Ramona Connor, the vice-president responsible for the Solidarity and Families pole.

"To provide an answer to this lack, the Collectivity has decided to set up a project which meets the needs of this vulnerable public", she said, adding that the objective of this complex is to optimize the means human and technical. Nearly 80 jobs will be created as part of this project. For the leader of the opposition Daniel Gibbs, "many questions remain as much on the very implementation of the project as on its financing". Mr. Gibbs reminded elected officials that this site was originally intended to accommodate the Regiment of Adapted Military Service (RSMA).
