A second wind for the MJC of Quartier d'Orléans

The cultural center of Quartier d'Orléans is no more. He was officially renamed "Willing Workers" by the brand new team. Interview with the president of the association Valérie Damaseau, elected last week.

Why has this center been closed since 2011, and what is the origin of this new name?

The building was closed by the prefecture because it was no longer up to standard. This center, created almost 47 years ago, was originally called "Willing Workers". The founders, most of whom went to live in the United States, have always wanted to help the young and old in the neighborhood. At the time, they let manage the town. Lately, one of the founders Leopold Illidge wanted to relaunch this cultural center, the only one that does not belong to the Collectivity.

How will you proceed to reopen this center?

We presented the new office to the public last Saturday. We are in the process of creating an association to reopen the building, and hope to collect grants. There is a lot of work to be done including the roof. We have a lot of projects that we would like to discuss with the COM. Young people in the neighborhood are impatiently waiting for the center to open its doors. I am very proud to participate in this initiative. Yes, it will take some time, but I remain confident.

As a reminder, the prefect Anne Laubies and the president of the Community Aline Hanson signed last July the framework contract, prior to the city contract, for the benefit of two sectors: Sandy Ground and Quartier d'Orléans. During this meeting, the Director General of Services (DGS) of the Collectivity Philippe Million had indicated that Quartier d'Orléans would benefit from sustained attention for initiatives in favor of youth.
