A pro “maritime professions” license project planned for Guadeloupe in September 2022

Proud to carry this new training in maritime professions, Doctor Malika René-Trouillefou, researcher at the University of the West Indies, lecturer in biochemistry and head of the Boréa research unit (biology of aquatic organisms and ecosystems), uses its voice and its resources to underline the urgency of training biodiversity experts.

Because the observation is critical. If the Caribbean islands play a predominant role in the preservation of marine biodiversity, their geographic isolation alters this environment. The The cumulative increase in the development of human activities and global warming weakens this biodiversity, it is a fact. Faced with this threat, Caribbean scientists are unanimous: it has become essential and urgent to train experts in these particular territories and ready to invest in them for the long term. The transformation of the sea and ocean thematic center into the excellence center of the University of the West Indies enabled the creation of a project for a new professional license. This professional license "sea professions" is oriented towards the preservation of the sea and the coast with the aim of training students in enhanced technical qualifications on the marine environment. It is prepared in one year after a Bac +2 level diploma (DUT, BTS) or following the first four semesters of a general license. A twelve to sixteen week internship will be compulsory. Doctor Malika René-Trouillefou actively participates in a better global understanding of our biotope. Many projects for the protection of coral reefs and ecological restoration are developed at the heart of the coral excellence laboratory, bringing together French ultramarine universities, the Boréa research unit and research institutes: CNRS, IRD, Ifremer, etc. Without forgetting the work being carried out on the diffusion and consequences of chemical pollutants, a real disaster for marine ecosystems. The “maritime professions” license, validated in the 2022-2026 offer from the University of the West Indies and for which enrollment will open in July 2022, will allow the new generation of scientists to better understand their territory and therefore, to better preserve it. _VX
