The very stuffy Nobel Academy located in Stockholm was the scene of an ugly sex scandal a few months ago and it is in this context that the Nobel Prize was canceled this year.
After the announcement made last May, women and men from the Swedish cultural universe have decided to propose their own Nobel, very simply called the "alternative" Nobel.
The method is intended to be more democratic and therefore more in line with what affects the readership. Do not panic, we do not fall for the authors with rose water but it is much fresher! We even find JK Rowling (Harry Potter) in this list of 47 authors selected by Swedish libraries. After this first selection, the public will vote for a shortlist which will be used by the provisional committee to elect the “alternative” Nobel. This approach is in keeping with the times, we break down the codes and overly rigid institutions which give great lessons but which, when we look more closely, are not very clear… They simply have more power and know how to protect themselves from prying eyes for a long time. So, this “alternative” Nobel will look a little further than usual and focus on popular successes and on authors who are usually shunned or even snubbed. There is not a big revolution either, for the moment. The majority of the selection remains Western but a good effort is made towards Africa, Asia and the Caribbean… This is where we are more interested. The wonderful Maryse Condé is in this list and we have the possibility to vote! Imagine for a second the Nobel Prize for Literature for Condé? You are going to tell me that it is an “alternative” Nobel and I would answer that the Nobel Academy has just shown that it is no better than us, simple readers. When we know a little about the career of this extraordinary woman, we know, we feel, that the “alternative” Nobel, the one awarded by her readers, will touch her more and have infinitely more meaning than a medal awarded by doctors. in a tuxedo toast without even a Djembé background or the smell of a mafé!
