UD: the PLU is “dangerous and eccentric”

The deputy and president of the Union for Democracy (UD) Daniel Gibbs wished to speak about the local urban plan (PLU) last Friday, during a press conference at its premises. The DU, which considers that this plan is “a threat” to our territory, asks the majority to postpone its application.

The challenges of the PLU are considerable for Saint-Martin. And “this precipitation of the Collectivity to vote for this project is almost irresponsible”, according to the deputy. “It is necessary to have a reflection which takes more time”, explains to the press Daniel Gibbs, stressing that the PLU lacks transparency. “We have had several versions: areas have changed (…) becoming at one point non-constructible, returning to constructible or the reverse”, notes the opposition leader: how can the population find their way there? he asks. To enlighten citizens and collect their opinions, the UD will go into the field this month. Last Saturday, members of the political party were also in front of supermarkets to survey the population.

By 2025, 15.000 more inhabitants in Saint-Martin

Planned in the planning and sustainable development project (PADD), these 15.000 additional inhabitants by 2025 make the deputy reflect. “If the majority's project sees the light of day (…) how can we accommodate them on an island hit by 30% unemployment, with such infrastructure? The schools are full ”,“ the COM coffers are empty ”and“ the prospects for economic development are almost nil ”, he protests. “We are an island that lives off tourism, it is the reality on the ground” and “we are heading towards an agricultural territory, which is not our main activity”. For Daniel Gibbs, the PLU is above all linked to financial issues, to the detriment of a real vision.
