Already in poor condition before Cyclone Irma hit, the roads continued to deteriorate. With the burying of the networks, some portions are smashed, driving is even dangerous.
The renovation of the main axis will take place in two stages, explains the COM: first the part going from the border of Oyster Pond to Agrément in 2020-2021, then the part going from Agrément to the Land border. Basses 2021-2023.
On Wednesday, September 9, the Executive Council validated the 2021-2023 road network renovation project, on the main axis going from the Terres-Basses border to Agrément. A large part of road traffic passes through this axis, this road deserves to be adapted and strengthened given the challenges of serving the island.
In addition to the laying of a new road surface (asphalt) and the development of sidewalks, this project also includes the reinforcement of structures, various curative interventions, horizontal and vertical signage and the repair of guardrails, for a overall cost of 2 million euros; the credits will be requested within the framework of the 50% State / 50% COM convergence contract.
The works will be carried out in installments, they will begin in the second half of 2021 and end in 2023.
This program is necessary in several ways:
- The guarantee of better traffic flow
- The guarantee of comfort and safety for users
- Better access to certain neighborhoods, sites and places (new roads are planned)
- Improvement of public space.
The Executive Council approved this program unanimously.
On the sidelines of this decision, it is important to specify that the Collectivity has already approved the 2020-2021 program for the renovation of the main road axis running from the Oyster-Pond border to Agrément.
The public contract inherent in this program is in the process of being notified. The company will be able to start the first phase of work at the end of October 2020.
The repair of the road surface (asphalt) will be carried out in successive stages, taking into account the burying work of the electrical and fiber networks and of the water and sanitation networks still to be carried out. A work schedule will be published in due course. This program amounts to 3 million euros.
