TIREX: presentation of interim results

TIREX * (Transfer of learning from Scientific Experience Returns) is one of the four projects selected by the ANR (National Research Agency) at the end of the 2018 edition of the “Hurricanes” call, which allocated 517 euros in aid.

It is structured around three main themes: the social question, the physical impacts and the reconstruction of models. For three years, a consortium of thirty-six researchers will analyze the impacts of the 2017 cyclones in the West Indies, with Saint-Martin as the pivotal territory, by formalizing continuous scientific feedback (RETEX) methods. "This research work aims to improve our risk culture" summarized Charlotte Terrac, project manager at the COM for major risks. She introduced Tuesday March 19 the first collective presentation of this project in the room of the territorial council. In short, it is about studying the consequences and the conditions of a disaster to better prepare for the next ones. The coordinator of this collective work, Frédéric Leone (Paul Valéry University - Montpellier 3) explained that they were “intermediate results at the mid-term of a project that will keep us going until 2021”. He also announced that in addition to scientific publications and fact sheets written for decision-makers, the conclusions of these different studies would be available on a website since “the idea is to share our knowledge”. TIREX is organized into complementary tasks: reconstitution of vulnerable trajectories from 1950-2017, impacts and resilience of coastal environments, crisis management and reconstruction monitoring, consolidation of scientific knowledge and transfer of learning to the populations. They combine the skills of all members of the group (risk geography, spatial analysis, geomorphology, political science, scientific mediation, atmospheric physics, modeling, climatology). A representative of each group of researchers made a presentation on Tuesday of their initial findings.
