A roadside check carried out in the Dutch part could have ended badly at the start of the week; when, for unknown reasons, a passerby threw an unknown object on a police vehicle, breaking the rear window of the police patrol vehicle.

The patrol team had just stopped a scooter for a routine check when an unknown object, which turned out to be a rock, was thrown in the direction of the officers, hitting the window of the patrol car, causing it break. Fortunately, no officer was injured at the scene.

The Sint Maarten police wish to inform the community that this type of behavior will not be accepted and will not be taken lightly.

This incident is currently under investigation with the hope of leading to the arrest of the person (s) involved. This person will be prosecuted for this blatant contempt and this lack of respect for the police.

During this particular check, 10 scooters were confiscated, 2 arrests and 7 people fined for various traffic violations.

The Sint Maarten police will continue to carry out these checks to ensure that all drivers obey the laws of the roads. We will not shrink from the controls planned based on this incident. The incident shows that the police force needs to step up the number of checks carried out in order to ensure the safety of communities.
