SINT MAARTEN / Fraud at ATMs: an individual arrested when he got off the plane by the police

A Bulgarian national suspected of being involved in credit card fraud activities was arrested last Saturday by the police on his arrival at Juliana airport.

The 22-year-old man had in his luggage various data capture devices from bank cards to ATMs. The scam occurs when devices illegally installed on ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, or gas pumps capture data or store cardholder PINs. Criminals use this data to create fake debit or credit cards and then steal victims' accounts. Taken to the police station, the individual was taken into custody and questioned by the investigators. "The arrest of the Bulgarian national marks a significant step forward in the fight against financial crimes," law enforcement said, adding that "further information regarding this case will be released as it becomes available." _AF
