ROAD SAFETY: Still no action to reduce wild runs

0

Wild runs are increasing in Saint-Martin. The situation is not new, however, there is still no lasting response to reduce it.

Today the prefecture no longer wishes to authorize races on public roads for two main reasons. On the one hand, it considers that the state of the roads is not sufficient to ensure the safety of the pilots and therefore to approve a portion of the road. On the other hand, she believes that the organization of motorcycle races would not solve the problem of wild runs: the races organized by associations being open to experienced bikers, young people could not participate.

A few years ago, the Collective mentioned the project to build a car / motorcycle track. "Our young adviser Jean-Sébastien Hamlet and the sports management worked on this project, but the complications and the successive crises did not allow to carry it out," explains president Daniel Gibbs while admitting that " lack of structures dedicated to this type of activity in Saint-Martin ”.

“Runs in the public domain are indeed dangerous but young people practice them anyway, despite the prohibitions. There is therefore reason to work jointly with the State services to find satisfactory and secure solutions ”, agrees the President of the COM.

So what are the solutions? For its part, the COM offers the securing of runs on the public highway, in partnership with associations and the gendarmerie. But the prefecture refuses to give authorizations. This rather encourages the construction of a track. The project could be carried out either by an association or by the COM. The State could financially support the project. It remains to find a person who wants to set up the project. (soualigapost.com)
