The prefecture unveiled yesterday the figures relating to road safety for the Northern Islands in 2015. Accidents, hospitalizations and offenses are on the rise.

Since the beginning of 2015, there have been 37 accidents compared to 30 for the previous year, on the roads of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy. "In this context, 48 people were hospitalized in 2015, 20 more than in 2014," said the prefecture. Offenses are also in the red with a 5,7% increase in driving under the influence of alcohol and 34% for those under the influence of drugs. The police also noted an increase of 20% for failure to wear a seat belt, and 19% for not wearing a helmet. Finally, non-compliance with priorities beats a record with an increase of 100%.

Increase in road mortality at national level

Prime Minister Manuel Valls announced 22 measures last month to tackle road deaths. Among them, the installation of 500 additional radars on the roads. "After twelve years of continuous decline, road mortality increased by 3,5% in 2014: 3 people lost their lives on the roads of France, 384 more than in 116, according to Observatory data National Interministerial Road Safety (ONISR) ”, indicates the government. And over the first nine months of the year, the number of deaths has already increased by 2013%.
