Violence against women: a plague that is also eating away at Saint Martin

0

This year, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which takes place today, focuses on prevention. One in three women has been a victim of violence in their lifetime, according to the organization "UN Women". Saint Martin is not spared from this phenomenon.

"I cannot believe the number of women in Saint-Martin who come to see us for cases of violence," said Léna Constant, director of the Fanm Vayan association, which is struggling to help them. Many women in distress go to the association to get support. Some have gone through really tough times in their lives. “Two victims will also discuss this painful subject with host Jacques“ Billy D ”Hamlet on SOS Radio (95.9 FM), tomorrow at 10am. Several young people from the Lycée des Iles du Nord will also give their testimonies in the studio. Among the other initiatives, the association Le Manteau de Saint-Martin will offer the preview of the film “Les suffragettes” at the Sandy Ground cinema at 19:30 pm on Friday. The screening will be followed by a debate, in the presence of a lawyer and a psychologist. Since 2014, the association has offered a listening space, located at the Beverly residence in Concordia. “This permanence, open Thursdays from 10 am to 12 noon, allows women to rest and obtain social support. They can also take workshops, including one specializing in self-esteem. In one year, nearly 130 women have lodged a complaint for violence in Saint-Martin, ”says Audrey Gil, the director of Manteau, an association that also has a night center. It is the gendarmes, other associations and sometimes CAF who call us to be safe in this place. ” Note that on the Dutch side, the Women's Desk will organize on Saturday at Rock House, in Port de Plaisance, an event entitled "The influence and impact of music & media on violence against women and girls".

Twice as many calls to 3919

The National Solidarity Federation for Women announced earlier this week that the 3919 handled more than 50.000 calls in 2014. This is twice more than the previous year for this national information line for women victims of violence.

"Orange tree the world"

Until December 10, the UN Secretary-General's “Unite” campaign - to end violence against women - invites the world to see life in orange: many events are planned and several sites will be illuminated in this color.
