Road safety in Saint-Martin: combining repression and prevention…

What measures have been put in place in Saint-Martin to improve road safety? Response elements…

This month of April 2019 will have been particularly deadly on the roads of Saint-Martin. On April 10, in Quartier d'Orléans, two 25 and 23-year-old two-wheeler drivers died in two accidents that occurred a few hours apart. The first by making a dangerous overtaking, the second following a collision with a car. A few days later, on April 17, the driver of a pickup truck lost control of his vehicle at the Agrément roundabout, and crashed into several cars and a quad, causing two serious injuries and two minor injuries. The next day, the 18th, following an accident between a motorbike and a car, Saint-Martin was again mourning the death of one of his family. On April 20, a gendarme who was patrolling on a motorcycle was injured by striking a vehicle from the rear.

Unfortunately, the black series continued with a new drama that took place on April 29, when a young twenty-year-old Saint-Martin died in Grand-Case.

If the causes of these accidents are diverse, some of them would have been favored (or at least their aggravated consequences), by risky behavior: excessive speed, lack of helmet or seat belt, driving under the influence of alcohol and / or narcotics…

The gendarmerie reminded at the beginning of the year that road safety was one of its priorities. Upon taking office, the prefect Sylvie Feucher also said that she was committed to getting things done on this issue and took various measures.

Combating insecurity for drivers but also others is the object of the repressive aspect. The prefecture works in cooperation with the prosecution and the gendarmerie forces. First of all, it is a question of getting non-compliant vehicles off the road: motocross, modified scooters, skeletons… In a few months, more than a hundred two-wheelers were seized during roadside checks, and destroyed when their owner did not have the opportunity to settle.

Concerning the noise pollution caused by certain vehicles, the territory will soon be equipped with a sound level meter and checks will be carried out in coordination with the territorial police to carry out measurements in addition to the usual road checks.

It is clear that repression alone does not work. That is why it is coupled with the preventive arm. The prefecture relays the national campaigns on its website and its Facebook and Twitter pages.

The State also participates financially in community projects aimed at improving road safety (Red Cross, Soualiga Youth, etc.).

The gendarmes carried out interventions with almost all the 4th classes of the French part in order to sensitize the students on risky behaviors, at an age when they are likely to access a two-wheeler. The prefecture has also set up ASSR (Attestation Scolaire de Sécurité Routière) training courses with its partners.

The highlight of prevention: on May 14 and 16, the road safety forum will take place. The 14 at the college of Quartier d'Orléans, and the 16 at the Vanterpool stadium. The objective is to bring together all the players in road safety: the gendarmes, the territorial police, the PJJ, the Red Cross, the COM as well as associations such as that of bikers from the North Islands.

Going through the associative fabric allows you to be as close as possible to the area and to young people. Insurers were also invited to participate. The prefecture says it is also working with them to identify the brakes and issues related to auto / motorcycle insurance.

In all, there will be a dozen speakers to present the various risks of the road in the form of fun workshops (deforming glasses, two-wheel simulator,  etc.).

This event open to all aims to raise awareness that there are real risks on the road. “The goal is not to stigmatize two-wheelers. But they are the most vulnerable and in general the youngest, ”said the Prefecture. (Source: www.soualigapost.com)
