"While we are in carnival and we are preparing to celebrate, this Sunday, May 5, 2019, the 17th edition of Fish Day on the site of Cul de Sac, I want to send our young people a message of caution on the roads but also in party places.

Serious accidents have taken place in recent weeks resulting in the death of young mopeds in the Quartier d'Orléans area. Last Monday, a young scooter driver lost his life on the road to Grand Case. Faced with these tragic circumstances and the pain of families that directly affects us, we can only address our support to loved ones and send a message of caution to our youth. Wearing a helmet, being careful on the road, respecting safety rules, everyone at their level can pass this message on to young drivers.

These popular festivals are an opportunity to relax from a busy daily life and have fun with friends, it is also essential to preserve this sense of celebration and sharing specific to our West Indian culture. We must, on the other hand, always keep in mind the security rules to be followed scrupulously to preserve yourself and others. There too, we can each at our level pass this message around us, in particular to the youngest who need landmarks.

The altercations, the unnecessary tensions, have no place in this federative festive context; they are also absolutely contrary to the spirit of our Friendly Island and to living together which is the strength and the uniqueness of Saint-Martin. I invite everyone, those who have chosen Saint-Martin to carry out a life course, to subscribe to this spirit of unity and sharing that Saint-Martinois have managed to preserve over the decades.

My elected officials join me in launching an appeal to all those who intend to go out to popular festivals this weekend, telling them to take advantage of what Saint Martin can offer them, while respecting other, values of our island, in exemplarity and kindness.

Happy Carnival and Happy Fish Day 2019! "
