Although the idea of ​​controlling malaria by vaccination has been around for a long time, to date no vaccine against this disease has been authorized. Much research is nevertheless being carried out worldwide to develop it and messenger RNA technology brings new hope. After developing a vaccine against Covid-19 with Pfizer, the German laboratory BioNTech indicated in a press release dated Monday July 26 that it wanted to apply messenger RNA technology to malaria by launching trials for a vaccine next year. . "BioNTech intends to develop the first mRNA vaccine for the prevention of malaria to be produced on the African continent" announced the company. Ugur Sahin, director and co-founder of BioNTech, a pioneering laboratory in mRNA research ensures that  "The probability of success is great". The studies, planned for 2020, will take place in Africa and in "other regions where malaria is widespread" but also in Germany within the framework of this program supported by the World Health Organization, the European Union and the African Union Center for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC). In the meantime, prevention of malaria remains based on taking medication and protective measures against mosquito bites.
